Perinatal Safety Collaborative

Providing care to patients in the perinatal setting is both complex and rewarding.  Many factors determine the nature of outcomes in perinatal care, including the level of prenatal care of the expectant mother, variation in hospitals' practice protocols and staffing models, and clinicians' ability to communicate effectively as a team. In response to the growing challenges in perinatal safety, the United Hospital Fund and the Greater New York Hospital Association launched the Perinatal Safety Collaborative in 2007.

The Perinatal Safety Collaborative is designed to address challenges by assisting member hospitals to improve obstetrical and perinatal care processes and to reduce the incidence of perinatal and maternal injuries using a structured and standardized approach to patient care.  By improving perinatal safety and the quality of care provided, this collaborative also seeks to reduce the incidence of adverse events and medical malpractice claims, as well as the escalating medical malpractice insurance premiums that are driving obstetricians out of the practice throughout the region.

Forty-five hospitals from throughout the region are participating in this collaborative.
